About this resource
The resource has been designed so that students can access all information via the Whare Uku website and accompanying Whare uku DVD. Student access to the computer and internet is essential.
The Whare Uku Website has three distinct sections;
- Content Areas: There are five main content areas within the website that provide materials to support students as they work through their activities. These section are titled; Rangahau, Whare Uku, Oneone, Harakeke and Whakahoa Whare.
- Student Activities: The Hei Mahi section provides activities that students can work through either in groups on individually. Many of the activities can be carried out independently, with clear instructions and worksheets provided. However, some of the activities (ie Hei Timatanga and Oneone experiments) are designed more for class or group work with greater teacher support required.
- Teachers Section: The kaiako section provides support materials and information for teachers. The teachers' notes provide activity summaries, links to additional resources, and teaching plans for the science activities.
To support students with their learning the site also provides a;
- Glossary: Kupu taka can be accessed by clicking on the Kupa Taka button at the top of the page. Words within the glossary can also be found throughout the content highlighted in green. A translation appears when clicking on the word highlighted. Students should be encouraged to refer to this glossary during their activities.
- Search: Rapua can be accessed from the homepage and provides students a way to quickly look for content by typing in key words. The search will display a link and the bread crumb trail to the pages that contain the key word searched for. The bread crumb trail is helpful for students to work out what locations the pages can be found in.
The DVD has two main sections;
- Te Rangahau Whare Uku: This is a 16 minute documentary about the Whare uku research project. With the focus on research this documentary is designed to be shown at the beginning of the unit to get students enthused and interested in research and Whareuku.
- Ngā Whakamātau: This section provides demonstrations of 6 student activities (science & harakeke). These activities can be used as a teaching tool to support students carry out their experiments.
